Everything we do, we do passionately and thoroughly. Each treatment plan is custom-tailored to the individual's needs.
Chinese Medicine – also referred to as Eastern Medicine, East Asian Medicine, or Traditional Oriental Medicine – is a holistic medical system in which the physical, emotional, and psycho-spiritual aspects of the self are one and the same. Chinese medicine boasts the longest recorded medical history in the world, with case studies and instructional texts dating back to before the Common Era. To achieve health and wellness, all aspects of a person must be in harmony, with no separation between an individual’s physical and mental health. Each person is unique in his or her genetic makeup, life experiences, personality, and lifestyle, and each treatment in Chinese Medicine is specifically tailored to that individual. One of the fundamental aspects of Chinese medicine is to find that balance between good living and a long and healthy life. Finding that balance point for each individual is what we do at Evolve Health + Wellness.
Multiple treatment modalities are used in the practice of Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, medical massage, herbal therapy, nutritional counseling, and movement therapy or exercises. Treatments at Evolve Health + Wellness may include any or all of these modalities within a single session, dependent on a person’s condition and treatment plan. To learn more about these modalities, explore the Treatment menu on our site.
Chinese Medicine offers a profound framework in which to describe how the body works. No one part of the body is more important than another, as the whole body is viewed as an ecosystem in harmony. The goal is to achieve balance in order to achieve complete health and well-being. The focus is on treating the body and not the disease, therefore treatment is not limited by diagnoses. Chinese medicine can affect change for a wide variety of conditions.
There are many different facets to Chinese medicine, developed over time via different disciplines. One such avenue was through the practice of martial arts. With that said, Chinese medicine is extremely effective in Pain Management and Orthopedics. It can be used for acute trauma and chronic pain syndromes in both ameliorating pain and promoting proper healing. Chinese medicine effectively treats sports medicine injuries and orthopedic conditions such as pain, inflammation, sprains and strains, sciatica, non-healing bone fractures, and various kinds of arthritis.
Another branch of Chinese medicine stems from epidemiology, and the treatment of early stage illnesses like colds and flu. Chinese medicine complements standard medical care very well and offers excellent alternatives when they are needed, especially for individuals with certain sensitivities—such as pregnant women or children, or those with weakened immune systems.
Long-term use of some medications can compromise the body’s normal response and healing mechanisms. Chinese medicine has been shown to be a safe and effective way to moderate these unwanted side effects and/or attenuate the therapeutic effect of some drugs. One such example is the use of Chinese medicine in supporting chemotherapy treatment.
Chinese medical theory posits that there is no separation between the mind, body, and spirit, so it is essential to note that treatment of the body results in treatment of the psycho-emotional self as well. This is one reason why acupuncture and herbs can successfully affect such illnesses as depression, addiction, and anxiety.

Acupuncture is the insertion of extremely thin solid needles into the body at specific points to stimulate blood circulation, bring about natural immune response, and for the circulation of qi. The needles are sterile, single-use, stainless steel and are about the thickness of a shaft of human hair.
Needles are most commonly inserted into the arms and legs and may be placed at or near the site of pain, but do not necessarily have to be. Depending on a person’s condition, acupuncture points on the back or front of the body, as well as the head and face may be used. Needles are typically retained for about 20-30 minutes, during which time one will feel very relaxed and may even fall asleep. Needle retention time varies according to the patient and their condition — as some people need more time, some less. The same principle applies to the number of needles used, which vary from person to person and from treatment to treatment, depending on an individual’s condition at the time of treatment.
When done correctly, acupuncture does not hurt. Depending on your reactivity and the point being treated, you may feel the insertion of the needle and subsequently the “qi sensation.” This can range from a dull ache to a throbbing, distending feeling that can move up or down the body and limbs. These are all normal sensations. Most people describe the feeling of being very relaxed at the end of treatment.
Acupuncture treats the body and not the disease, and as such is an effective healing tool for everything from the common cold to pain management to addiction. The World Health Organization has published an official report on the effectiveness of acupuncture based on evidence from clinical trials. This list includes conditions such as allergic rhinitis, headache, dysentery, blood pressure regulation, stroke, adverse affects in the treatment of oncology, and various types of pain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists acupuncture as an effective treatment tool for chronic diseases and pain in lieu of pharmaceutical interventions. Since acupuncture stimulates and guides the body’s innate healing response, it can be used for just about any thing the body experiences.

Traditional Chinese Herbal Therapy is a highly organized system of prescribing herbs according to ancient and modern Chinese medicine patterns. Rather than a single herb or medication, herbal formulas usually combine anywhere from 4-15 different herbs, which complement each other for the best therapeutic effect. Although the official Materia Medica of China lists many thousands of medicinals, about 300 are most commonly used, and can be combined in many different ways to treat a variety of conditions.
Each herb has different properties such as temperature, flavor, and direction. These qualities generally determine its therapeutic effect. For instance, Ren Shen (人参, ginseng) is warm, sweet and slightly bitter, making it a powerful qi tonic. Bo He (薄荷, mint) is cool, acrid and dispersing, which makes it very useful for certain kinds of colds and flu.
A custom herbal prescription allows the practitioner to alter the ingredients and dosages according to the patient’s needs. By combining individual herbs into comprehensive formulas, multiple symptoms and aspects of one’s physiology can be addressed holistically.
Yes. When prescribed by a trained and licensed practitioner, herbs are extremely safe.
The oldest complete clinical textbook in the world is the classic Chinese formulary the Shang Han Lun. Dating back to the Han Dynasty – before the year 220 CE – it describes in detail epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment strategies for contracted diseases. And this is just the first extant book in the entire recorded history of Chinese herbal medicine.
Chinese herbs have been used to treat everything from the common cold and influenza, to acute trauma and injury, to chronic illness and parasites. There are many conditions in which herbs are more effective than acupuncture alone. This includes such things as dermatology, gynecology, hormonal imbalances, autoimmune disorders, cancer support, internal medicine, and infectious diseases.
There are many different ways of taking herbs. The strongest and most traditional way of taking herbs is to cook them fresh each day on your stovetop. You can also take herbs as a powder mixed with hot water (similar to instant coffee or tea), in capsules, pills, or as pre-cooked and pre-measured liquid vacuum packs.
Herbal soaks, plasters, creams, or masks may also be prescribed for external use when appropriate.
Herbal prescriptions are custom made for individuals on a case-by-case basis and therefore the treatment plan and duration will depend on the condition as well as other lifestyle factors that may influence the course of treatment. For most conditions the effect should be immediate, with an individual’s prescription changing as the condition changes. It is common for people to use herbal therapy for weeks to months at a time until a satisfactory state of health is achieved. Occasionally, herbs are required as a maintenance measure for chronic intractable conditions.

Everything you ingest, from meat and dairy to fruit, vegetables, and grains, has a particular effect on your body, and your body responds with very particular actions to ensure proper digestion and absorption. In Eastern nutrition, the value of a food is not based on nutritional content alone. The interaction between the foods you eat and how your body is going to process that food is a critical part of an appropriately balanced diet.
A therapeutic diet does not look the same for everyone. For instance, two people can have similar symptoms of indigestion and abdominal discomfort, but have completely different secondary symptoms that would inform the appropriate treatment. One person may have digestive trouble with fever and a burning sensation in the stomach, which means that they should avoid oily and sweet foods, and stick to bland foods without much flavor. Another person may have digestive trouble but also have cold hands and feet and an urgent need to go to the bathroom first thing in the morning. This person should avoid raw meals such as salads, and try to eat more soups or foods prepared to warm the body. Both patterns of differentiation can cause such symptoms as indigestion and loose stool, but the root cause and subsequent treatment plan could not be further from each other.
It is a common misconception that people should only regulate their diet if they have digestive trouble or if they are trying to alter their weight. Certain conditions such as migraines, depression, epilepsy, and insomnia, can be significantly improved by eating the right foods and avoiding the wrong ones. The timing of foods according to the hours of the day and the seasons of the year can make the difference between being symptom-free and living the Particular dietary recommendations will vary depending on a person’s overall constitution and condition.
Nutritional counseling focuses on optimizing an individual’s dietary habits and behaviors to achieve health. At Evolve Health + Wellness, this includes comprehensive assessments of nutritional intake, health history, and lifestyle needs. Laboratory diagnostics serve as a tool to guide recommendations, which are selected and personalized for each individual based on principles of Functional Nutrition and Eastern Nutrition, and informed by the latest research available on the effects of diet and nutrition.
Functional Nutrition emphasizes the use of whole foods to achieve the proper balance of macro- and micro-nutrients. Eastern Nutrition focuses on an individual’s constitution and takes into account environmental influences such as climate, season, and lifestyle to determine an appropriate diet. Both philosophies are combined to create an optimal diet and meal plan customized to an individual’s needs and health goals. Supplementation with certain vitamins, minerals, or herbal therapy may also be recommended.

Massage is a treatment modality whereby a practitioner uses their hands or other tool to press, rub and manipulate the skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments for therapeutic effect. Massage may range from light stroking to deep pressure, and can be used to alleviate pain and tension and restore normal alignment and function. At Evolve Health + Wellness, massage may be used as a stand-alone therapy, or in addition to other treatment modalities such as before or after an acupuncture session.
Tui Na, literally meaning “push and grasp”, is a physical manipulative therapy based on Chinese medical theory. Often referred to as Asian medical massage, many different hand techniques are used at the joints, along the meridians, and at acupressure points to treat a broad range of diseases, including musculoskeletal disorders, acute and chronic traumatic injuries, stress-related disorders, and digestive and respiratory disorders. It has been shown to be especially effective for pediatric patients and orthopedic conditions.
Zheng Gu, literally meaning “upright/correct bone,” is the physical manipulation of the joints and bones. It is used in conjunction with tui na to correct misalignment and alleviate certain orthopedic conditions. Unlike chiropractic or osteopathic adjustments, it is focused not only on manipulation of the joint, but of the surrounding tissues, muscles, and fascia as well. Release of the myo-fascia will encourage the bones and joints to align themselves, thereby making Asian bone mobilization an oftimes subtle and highly effective procedure.

Chiropractic is a form of manual medicine used to restore proper biomechanical motion into a joint that is not moving efficiently. Chiropractic adjustments can be used on any joint in the body, not just the spine. Adjustments may be the primary treatment, or a supplemental tool in the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal disorders.
Chiropractic treatment at Evolve Health + Wellness begins with a neurologic and orthopedic examination to determine the source of pain. This is followed by the use of functional movement screens – such as gait, squat, breathing, and repetitive range of motion analysis – to assess ways in which the body may be compensating in the presence of pain. A global picture of the body’s biomechanical state of health is determined before treatment is administered.
Treatments may include manipulation of joints, manipulation of soft tissue or myofascial release, kinesiotaping, and functional rehabilitation to stabilize problem areas. Tools such as wedges, blocks, or bolsters may also be used to assist in re-aligning the body into proper positioning.
Generally speaking, people experience immediate relief upon restoring normal function to a joint or series of joints that have been causing pain. The chiropractic adjustments techniques are achieved by manually taking parts of the body through normal ranges of motion, and are therefore safe.
Pain is the body’s way of saying there is something wrong. Restoring function of the neuromusculoskeletal system will allow the body to move more efficiently and pain free.

Cupping is a therapeutic practice that involves creating suction on the skin using a glass or plastic cup. In fire cupping, negative pressure is created in a glass cup by applying a flame to the cup to remove oxygen before placing it on the skin. With plastic cups, the cup is placed on the skin before attaching a device that generates suction through a manual pump.
Cupping can be applied stationary on dry skin or as sliding cups with an emollient that allows the cups to glide along the skin.
The suction from the cups can range from minimal to very strong and can be modified by the practitioner. When applied correctly, cupping does not hurt and can even be relaxing for some.
Cupping leaves temporary marks on the skin that can look like bruising. In cases of wet cupping, where lancets are used to puncture the skin along with cupping, the marks may be darker. The marks themselves typically do not hurt and will resolve within days of treatment.

Gua sha, translated as “scraping sand,” is a therapeutic technique in which the surface of the skin is repeatedly stroked in linear motions using a round-edged tool. This is typically performed along the neck and back, but can also be used on the arms, legs, and even the face.
The intensity of pressure is modified depending on the area of the body and the condition for which treatment is being applied. For something like neck pain, the pressure and therefore the sensation of the treatment is expected to be more intense, whereas draining lymph from the neck would require less pressure and therefore the experience is less intense.
In Chinese medicine, we refer to those markings as sha or sand, as it resembles grains of sand coming to the surface of the skin. As the gua sha tool moves over the body, small capillaries may break and create bruise-like markings. These markings will diminish in the days following treatment.

There are various types of moxibustion therapy. The most common practice is one in which the medicinal herb mugwort – scientific name Artemisia argyi – is burned at or near acupoints on the surface of the skin for therapeutic effect through thermal, radiation, and pharmacological actions.
The general consensus on moxa therapy is that the warming effect of the moxa is a pleasant sensation. There are occasions on which the heat can become intense, but precautions are made to minimize injury from treatment. The combustion of moxa produces a smoke that some may find irritating. At Evolve Health + Wellness, we have two treatment rooms built specifically for the purpose of moxibustion therapy in order to limit unnecessary exposure to smoke.

Qi gong or “Qi cultivation” involves a series of breathing exercises coupled with movement and visualization to regulate specific systems of the body. Qi gong may be practiced as a daily exercise or used during treatment when necessary. These exercises are typically learned and practiced as a set or series, with the intended purpose of regulating the whole body, mind, and spirit. When used as a treatment modality, the patient will be prescribed parts of a series of exercises to perform on their own. These exercises can be as simple as standing in place while diaphragmatically breathing, or can be as complex as a sequence of coordinated movements of the arms and legs with varied breathing techniques.
We offer Group Classes as well as Private Lessons for those interested in learning how to cultivate their own Qi to strengthen the body and mind.
Dao Yin, often referred to as Chinese Yoga, is a form of exercise that combines body movements and breathing. The word Dao 導 means “to guide” or “to direct”, in this case to regulate the Qi or vital energy of the body by guiding its flow. The original meaning of Yin 引 is “to draw a bow”, and indicates the pulling and activating of strength and inner tension as well as the opening of a space between the bow and the string. Nowadays, it can mean “stretch”, “pull out (pain)”, or “release/relieve blockages”.
A seventh-century medical handbook Zhubing yuanhou lun 諸病源候論 (Origins and Symptoms of Medical Disorders) says: “The practice consists of drawing together in one’s body all the bad, the pathogenic, and the malevolent forms of Qi. Then one follows them, pulls them in, and guides them to leave forever. This is why it is called Dao Yin.”
We offer Group Classes as well as Private Lessons for those interested in learning Dao Yin practices.
Yoga is an ancient Indian system of techniques and guidance for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Here in New York, the most well-known aspect of yoga is Hatha yoga, focused on the Asana or postures in physical practice. The various styles of yoga that you may encounter – such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Kundalini, etc – fit under the umbrella of Hatha yoga in terms of the focus on physical posture practice. Yoga itself is step-by-step guide on how to live life, with physical fitness being one of the eight limbs of the practice. In the two best known source texts, the Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita, the nature of—and obstacles to—higher awareness and fulfillment are explained, as well as a variety of methods for attaining those goals. Besides movement through physical postures, yoga practice can include breathing exercises, chanting, and meditation.
At Evolve Health + Wellness we offer a variety of group yoga classes, including Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and our Back To Health: Yoga for Back Pain series, designed by Boston University and put to the test through clinical trial.
We offer Group Classes as well as Private Instruction for those interested in Yoga as a therapeutic tool.

This course is designed to provide the practitioner with the practical knowledge and skill to administer Tui Na therapy as an independent and complete treatment modality. This course is divided into three modules: the back; the neck and upper limbs; and the back and lower limbs. While together these three parts serve as integrated regulatory treatment for the whole body, they can also be used independently. Performing the full-body sequence enables the practitioner to learn both fundamental and advanced hand techniques in the context of an actual treatment.
For those familiar with the Zheng Gu Tui Na system, this course is an evolution of material from that program. The seven courses have been re-designed into three modules that cover both fundamental and advanced techniques, reflecting the natural diagnostic and therapeutic progression that would unfold in clinical practice.
Module 1:
The key element in this sequence is what we refer to as the Back Protocol, which ties together the three parts of the full-body sequence. Fundamental and advanced techniques will be presented alongside discussions of anatomy and body mechanics to deepen the practitioner’s understanding of treatment and strategy. A more in-depth explanation of the treatment of the upper and lower limbs will be presented in Modules 2 and 3.
Module 2:
Introduction to Advanced Tui Na techniques for mobilization of the Neck and Upper Limb. Building on the concepts and techniques introduced in the previous Module 1, various hand techniques are combined to create an integrated approach to joint and limb structural and channel alignment. Participants will learn effective treatment protocols and strategies, as well as best-use practices and contraindications.
Module 3:
Introduction to Advanced Tui Na techniques for mobilization of the Back and Lower Limb. Building on the concepts and techniques introduced in the previous Modules 1 and 2, various hand techniques are combined to create an integrated approach to joint and limb structural channel alignment. Participants will learn effective treatment protocols and strategies, as well as best-use practices and contraindications.

This class introduces the skills required for Wilderness First Aid. While we often think of wilderness as an area in nature far from civilization, it is, in fact, defined as any location that is remote from healthcare by duration of time, not distance. That could mean in an urban area in a natural disaster, on the sports field, or an airplane in flight. Every healthcare practitioner should have enough first aid skills to be able to help in such a situation. This seminar draws from the best methods of EMT First Responders and Traditional Chinese Trauma medicine to equip participants with the skills they need to help others.
The curriculum will describe the TCM understanding of trauma and injuries and their treatment. External application of gaos, liniments and plasters will be discussed. Adjunctive modalities such as acupressure, cupping, guasha, moxibustion and plum blossom needles will be covered.

Learn MoreOur practitioners at Evolve Health + Wellness will host regular community acupuncture days to benefit our patients and community as a whole. In an effort to spread healing and wholeness to our precious community and the world at large, the cost of treatment is sliding scale and all proceeds are donated to a local non-profit. RSVPs are encouraged and all walk-ins are welcome.
We are committed to improving life on this planet, one treatment at a time. We believe that, like compassion, generosity is both a virtue and a practice, and do our best to give what we can to those in need. The staff of Evolve has been involved in various projects, including the founding of a not-for-profit organization called the Global Alternative Healthcare Project, partnering with other NGOs such as the Ethnic Minorities Outreach in Viet Nam, and volunteering with other organizations to deliver care and aid to communities in need around the world.
